Professional Registration as an Asset in Engineering Employment
- Purpose of this Guidance Note
This Guidance Note is issued by the Board of Engineering of Trinidad and Tobago (BOETT) to
assist employers in understanding the professional value of engaging engineers who are Registered
and Licensed with the Board. It explains why BOETT registration should be regarded as a
professional asset across all engineering disciplines, particularly for positions involving
engineering duties of responsible charge. - Role of the BOETT
The BOETT is the statutory body established to regulate the practice of engineering in Trinidad
and Tobago in the interest of public safety, quality, and professional accountability. A core
function of the Board is to assess and register engineers who have demonstrated the qualifications,
experience, competence, and ethical commitment necessary to practise engineering responsibly. - What BOETT Registration Represents
An engineer who is Registered and Licensed with the BOETT has successfully completed a
structured and independent assessment process that includes, as applicable:
- Verification of accredited academic qualifications
- Evaluation of relevant and progressive professional experience
- Assessment of technical competence within a specific engineering discipline
- Demonstration of knowledge and application of applicable standards and codes
- Acceptance of professional and ethical obligations to clients, employers, and the public
Across all disciplines—civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, chemical, environmental, and
others—registration signifies that an engineer has met internationally recognised professional
benchmarks.
- Registration as an Asset to Employers
Including BOETT registration as an asset in recruitment criteria provides tangible benefits to
employers, including:
- Enhanced due diligence: Registration provides independent verification of an engineer’s
competence and readiness for responsible practice.
1 - Risk reduction: Registered engineers are assessed for safety, reliability, and compliance
with accepted standards, reducing technical and professional risk. - Professional accountability: Registered engineers are subject to a Code of Ethics and
disciplinary oversight. - Quality assurance: Registration signals a commitment to professional excellence and
continuous development. - Public confidence: The engagement of registered professionals enhances stakeholder trust
in engineering outcomes.
Importantly, treating registration as an asset rather than a mandatory requirement allows
employers flexibility while still encouraging high professional standards.
- Relevance Across Engineering Disciplines
While assessment methods may vary by discipline, the underlying principles of BOETT
registration are consistent across all fields of engineering. Each discipline-specific evaluation
focuses on the safe, competent, and ethical application of engineering principles appropriate to the
role and sector in which the engineer operates. - Engineering Positions of Responsible Charge
Positions involving engineering duties of responsible charge require sound professional
judgment, accountability, and adherence to accepted standards. BOETT registration provides
employers with assurance that candidates have already been evaluated for these attributes and are
capable of assuming such responsibilities appropriately. - Recommended Employer Practice
The BOETT encourages employers to:
- Include BOETT registration as an asset in job advertisements and role descriptions
- Recognise registration as a positive differentiator during candidate evaluation
- Support unregistered engineers in pursuing registration as part of professional development
Such practices contribute to the strengthening of engineering standards nationally while supporting
employers’ operational and reputational objectives.
- Further Information
The BOETT remains available to provide clarification on registration requirements, discipline
specific licensing, and the role of registered engineers in professional practice. Employers are
encouraged to engage with the Board for guidance as needed.
