The first Caribbean Urban Forum was held in Georgetown, Guyana in April 2011, and brought together official delegates and professional planning practitioners from nine CARICOM member states, Canada, the United States and the Netherlands. Participants endorsed a Caribbean Urban Agenda and advanced preparations for the launch of a regional association of professional planners. The 2011 meeting also initiated a dialogue on a joint research and policy agenda and the technical requirements for urban management in the Region. The second Caribbean Urban Forum (CUF2012), Jamaica in March 2012 had participation from 140 urban professions including representatives from eleven CARICOM Member States as well as international participants. CUF2012 advanced discussions on the Caribbean Urban Agenda, showcased examples of good planning and urban management practice from across the Caribbean, served as the launch pad for the Caribbean Planners’ Association (CPA) and solidified the Region’s position on urban aspects of the green economy in preparation for Rio + 20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development held in June 2012.

CUF 2013 seeks to:

  1. Examine the region’s status on the urban aspects of the green economy post Rio +20.
  2. Update the evolving Caribbean Urban Agenda emanating from CUF 2011 and CUF 2012.
  3. Highlight the importance of local governance in finding solutions to urban development challenges.
  4. Discuss how heritage and culture can be used to stimulate urban revitalisation.
  5. Review professional planning practice and education across the Caribbean.
  6. Convene the second general meeting of the Caribbean Planning Association (CPA).
